Claire's Clinical Nest (collapsible)

Accessories for Neonatal ICUs

Description:

Claire’s Clinical Nest® (collapsible)

Developed as an alternative to the standard Claire’s Nest, the Clinical Nest features sides that can be folded down to allow simultaneous use of ventilation and respiratory support tubes, as well as to provide easy access to the newborn.

The purpose of the nest is to provide your newborn with boundaries—just as they had in the womb. This gives them a surface to touch and brace against when stretching. Nests help the baby curl up, relax, sleep, and stay warm.

  • Any baby breastfeeding in a prone or side-lying position within the Claire's Nest must be monitored using a cardio-respiratory monitor or an apnea device. This should be discussed with the parents. Safe sleep practices related to reducing the risk of cot death should always be discussed with parents in line with current healthcare guidelines.

  • Temperature monitoring is important when using the Claire’s Nest, as it provides a thermal environment for the infant. The baby’s temperature should be checked prior to nest placement and one hour afterward to prevent overheating. Temperatures should be monitored regularly, and incubator settings should be adjusted as needed.

  • Regular repositioning of the infant throughout the day is essential. This has been shown to help reduce flattening and deformation of the head in some infants and provides consistent pressure relief to support skin integrity. Side-lying and prone positioning have also been shown to improve digestion and respiratory effort in certain neonates.

  • When placed in the nest, the infant should be able to move their arms and hands, allowing movement toward the face and mouth, which promotes comfort and self-soothing.

  • When using the nest, aim to support the infant in a flexed position, with the legs gently contained at the base of the nest.

  • The straps of the nest may be used to support the baby, but movement should never be restricted or obstructed.

  • The individual needs of each infant must be assessed. If there is uncertainty regarding positioning, clinical staff should seek guidance from the ward's medical team.

  • Do not use the nest if any component is broken or missing.

  • Nest sizing is provided as a guideline only. Always assess each infant individually and use an appropriately sized nest. Cuski’s Bertie Positioning Aid can be used to help adapt any nest for personalized use.

  • NESTS ARE FOR HOSPITAL USE ONLY.

  • Please read all instructions carefully before use and retain them for future reference.
